Become A Coach
Coaching is one of our most rewarding volunteer positions, but also the most time intensive. We ask that each site have at least 1 Head Coach who can commit to 2 days per week and at least 1 Assistant Coach who can commit to the same 2 day per week for the 12-week season.
In addition to being role models for confidence and healthy living, coaches must be available during the after-school / early evening hours and need to attend our 1 day Certification Training to learn how to deliver the Girls on the Run curriculum. Coaches work directly with the 3rd-5th or 6th-8th grade girls, teaching them healthy habits and training them for the culminating event, our end of program 5k event!
You DO NOT need to be a runner to coach, but we do ask that you value physical fitness in your own life.
Coaching requires a commitment of approximately 5-6 hours per week for 12 weeks which includes travel and lesson preparation time. Coaches meet with their group twice a week for approximately 1 1/2 hours. Each program has a minimum of 2-3 coaches per location and coaches share the coaching responsibilities. Coaches must also attend the season-end GOTR 5k with their girls.
This coaching commitment must not be taken lightly. Consistency is extremely important to our girls, therefore you must be able to attend practices for the entire 12-week season.
During the 12-week program, the girls slowly build stamina and increase the distance they run through game-based workouts. Rather than race competitively, girls are encouraged to strive for their own goals. Each Running Buddy is paired with a girl and runs by her side, encouraging her to do her best while also recognizing and respecting her limits. Be the inspiration to a young girl and help her cross the finish line of her first 5K. The job of a running buddy is to be by a girl’s side for this fun and exciting experience.
That means running or walking at her pace, encouraging her to do her best, but also recognizing and respecting her limits. You will join the girls for a practice 5K at their program site, and then we need you to help pace her through the main event!
All Running Buddies must have a current Background check on file. Background checks are valid for two years.
